Abstract
emelle.me brings over a decade of hands-on experience implementing machine learning and artificial intelligence systems across diverse sectors. Our foundational research in emotion recognition provided early insights into the principles now driving state-of-the-art language models. Through years of work with tensor-based architectures, IBM Watson, and emerging ML libraries, we have accumulated deep institutional knowledge of the second and third-order effects that emerge when these systems operate at city scale.
Academia & Research
Our journey began in academic research environments, investigating the computational modeling of human emotion. This early work required building custom tensor operations and neural architectures before modern frameworks existed. The constraints of that era forced a deep understanding of gradient flow, attention mechanisms, and representation learning that now underpin transformer architectures.
Collaborations with university research labs allowed us to validate hypotheses against rigorous peer review while maintaining focus on practical deployment. This dual perspective—theoretical rigor and engineering pragmatism—remains central to our methodology.
Research & Development
Working with early ML APIs and platforms—including IBM Watson's cognitive services—provided real-world feedback loops unavailable in purely academic settings. We observed how models behaved under production load, how edge cases accumulated into systemic failures, and how user interaction patterns diverged from training distributions.
These insights informed our approach to MLOps before the term existed: monitoring for distribution shift, implementing graceful degradation, and designing human-in-the-loop fallbacks. We learned that model accuracy metrics tell only part of the story; system resilience determines real-world success.
Enterprise & Government
Deploying ML systems at municipal and enterprise scale revealed emergent behaviors invisible in sandbox environments. Second-order effects—where model outputs influence user behavior, which in turn shifts input distributions—require careful monitoring and intervention strategies. Third-order effects, where these feedback loops interact with broader social and operational systems, demand cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Our government engagements emphasized accountability, auditability, and explainability requirements that have since become industry standards. Enterprise deployments taught us to navigate organizational complexity, integration constraints, and the critical importance of stakeholder alignment in AI adoption.
Current Focus
Today, we apply this accumulated knowledge to help organizations navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. From model selection and fine-tuning to infrastructure design and governance frameworks, we provide guidance grounded in years of operational experience. We understand not just how these systems work, but how they fail—and how to build resilience against those failures.
The principles that guided our early emotion recognition research—careful attention to data quality, respect for human complexity, and awareness of downstream consequences—remain our north star as we help clients implement the next generation of intelligent systems.
